Hi I'm Paul a a longtime woodworker. I'm 75 and anxious to share the things I do well in woodworking. To my friends I'm called the FINISH GUY. My woodworking friends call me when they have wood finishing issues. In my early twenties I was fortunate to find my mentor. A kindly old gentleman (probably younger than I am now) who was a master craftsman doing virtually all phases of custom woodworking by hand without power tools!
It's my turn to give back. If you have wood finishing concerns please feel free to ask questions on my UA-cam Channel. I typically respond daily, early mornings (with my regular coffee) and late evenings (with my decaf).
If you want more detailed guidance I do offer flat fee personal online and phone consulting. Here I guide you through the entire refinishing process from start to finish (bad pun, sorry).

How to remove paint from wood | Beginners Guide | Part 2
This video covers wood paint removal and wood lustre restoration after stripping. In How to Remove Paint from Wood I'll demonstarte the actual wood stripping process and show you the aftermath of harsh chemical paint removers. Then we'll review the steps you'll need to restore the woods surface before finishing.
Paint removers wreak havoc with wood fibers. The first step after removing paint is a thirough wash to remove old paint residue and stripper residue. Next we have to sand away broken wood fibers to smooth out the surface. The wood at this point has been beaten up badly so it's time to restore some lustre by adding an oil. I recommend bathing the wood with tung oil either Pure Tung Oil or Polymerized (Never products labelad as Tung Oil Finish, as they contain varnishes and other additives).
Now you've removed an old unwanted finish and restored much of the woods natural lustre: it's time to move the the next step staining your piece or choosing a top coat.
Please leave comments and ask questions. I really do love to hear from y'all.

Bubble-Free Polyurethane Application Technique
THE BEST lesson/ tutorial
I am about to stain and finish an old wrought iron and wood garden bench. Would you recommend the spar varnish and tung oil mixture for the wood? I’m in Florida too.
Hey Peter. It really depends on the quality of finish you want. My combo finish certainly will do well as both Spar varnish and Tung Oil are UV resistant and waterproof. Oil penetrates into the wood where varnish sits on top so it's a nice duo. Most people would think of it as overkill for outdoor furniture. You can use either as a stand alone or combine for the best of bith worlds. best . . . paul
@@paulsDIYsolutions Thanks. I think with the rain, heat and humidity probably a combo would be beneficial. I bought it at an estate sale and it’s in pretty good shape, it just needs some good sanding and finishing. Thanks for your help.
I’m finishing an antique drafting table and can’t seem to get my final coat smooth. I’m using oil based, have thinned it 3:1, have a good brush, following your technique for dripping out, and am going slowly. I’ve lightly sanded between each coat, but after it dries, there’s still little bumps on it, I mean tiny ones. It’s not smooth. Any thoughts?
Hey Raechel. I assume you sanded down to bare wood, spent extra time removing sanding dust, and finished the final sand at 180 grit. Now that we have a perfectly smooth surface you're ready for the top coat. I them assume your work area was free of sanding dust and your brush clean. You lay down your first coat, let it dry overnight and then in the next day do a very light sanding with a 220 grit. After the sanding you vacuum the surface and wipe it down with a dampened lint free towel. You wait awhile for the dust to settle and then quickly give it a wipe. Next coat same procedure. Final coat may have some dust nibs that settle and for the final sand you use a brown paper bag material so as not to alter the sheen. Am I right so far?
Yes, that’s all correct other than I’m doing the best to control the dust in my garage. Only working there when nothing else is going on and definitely not sanding something else while it’s wet. That’s the only thing I can think of is that it’s dust. But maybe they’re super small bubbles? I’m in Memphis, and it’s super hot and humid right now. Would that affect anything? I also don’t understand the brown paper bag technique.
I am refinishing a beautiful 103-year-old dining room table. I love your videos.
Thanx Techguy. Wish I had your tech knowledge! best . . . paul
I’m refinishing a 103-year-old beautiful table. Your videos are wonderful. Thank you so much!
I have been Stripping, sanding, and staining a beautiful 103 year old dining room table. Tomorrow I want to start putting on the polyurethane finish. Interestingly enough, I have the exact same can of polyurethane finish that was used in this video. I have been watching so many videos and this is by far the very best. Thank you so much.
Your welcome. Nice project. best . . . paul
Hi! Thank you for very useful video and great tips. I tried to do something similar, but something went a bit off, so I’m kindly asking you for an advice: I have a wooden IKEA table. Its top made of several wooden blocks, so it’s not a single sheet of wood. I dyed it using water-based dye, and covered it with the first coat of polyurethane lacquer. The thing is that after applying the first coat I can see that the surface gone patchy - some wooden blocks are glossy and smooth, and some - dull and a bit rough to the touch, where the wood absorbed the lacquer. I was going to use fine sandpaper to even the surface after the first coat of lacquer. But now I’m a bit confused as I don’t know if I could damage the dye layer on the dull patches and expose the wood, as it is obviously very thin. What would you suggest to do in this case? I was going to do at least three coats of lacquer with sanding in between.
Hey Vsem. Perfectly normal for the first coat. Polyurethane is a surface coating but often with the first coat it soaks in the woods pores in areas resulting in dullness. This seldom can happen with the second coat but it's still normal. Just plug ahead following my video and youi'll be fine. Just for clarification (so your friends don't jump all over you when you explain what happened) polyurethane and lacquer are completely different coatings chemically. So using the phrase POLTURETHANE LACQUER will get you thrown out of the local woodworkers club. best . . . paul
@@paulsDIYsolutions Thanks a lot, this was very helpful! I’ll try to continue tomorrow and we’ll see how it goes )) I think I will still sand it very lightly trying not to damage dyed layer, so the next poly coat holds better. Cheers! P.S. Thanks for the tip regarding poly vs lacquer. Do you call what I use just "polyurethane"? I thought that polyurethane is a name for a chemical stuff, a base for this product, not the product itself. I mean you wouldn't call acrylic lacquer just "acryl" or "acrylic", would you?
@@paulsDIYsolutions I also used your trick with applying poly exactly like you did in the video. I used the best brush available, nice, soft and thick, similar to yours, but faced the following: in all the spots where I started applying there were kind of little puddles, and there were not enough poly on the brush by the end of the stroke so I needed to dip the brush again to continue the "wet line". Important note: I didn't thin the poly as the manufacturers' instruction on tha can directly said that you shouldn't dilute the product. The product itseld wasn't thick anyway and was very close in density to the stuff you finally used after watering it down. So what could be the problem here?
Great content...I've used these steps exactly as described as a new woodworker and it work almost flawlessly. My issues were due to my own mistake of going against your wisdom and trying to take out wet bubbles. Learned my lesson quickly! What are your thoughts on the new mono coat products out there? I'm staining a walnut top and it a mono coat rubio product was recommended. Thoughts?
Hey Sunriot. Over-rated and expensive. It's a hard wax oil. There are other less expensive wax oil finishes out there. In the end I would put my combo finish up against them any day. "THE Best Clear Wood Combination Finish - Refinishing Furniture". Link Below. best . . . paul Video link ua-cam.com/video/vxRhqqAzuLo/v-deo.html
This is the only video that has put me in the correct direction when it comes to finishing poly. I appreciate your help.
Thanx Freckles. Happy to be part of the journey. best . . . paul
Thank you! I’ve learned more from your video! Do you have a video using poly acrylic over paper collage? Again, my thanks.
Thanx Yvonne. No Nothing with paper collages. Sorry. best . . . paul
I sucessfuly rejuvinated old paint brushes that had an oil base paint build up at the ferul. I soak them to the top of the bristles in laquer thiner over night. I them do the soap and water routine using a metalic paint brush comb to clean the deposits from the top of the bristles. I always store my brushes by wrapping them in a paper towel to hold the bristles together. The paper towel wicks away an moisture.
Good job Mike. best . . . paul
watched a few of your videos and it's the way I want to go from now on, specially this current project. So frustrated in the fast drying paints and clear coats these days. No work time at all. I bought almost everything but cannot find the mid range or high end natural bristle brushes. Seems everything is fairly thin and don't know if ox hair is ok as they seem to be most popular. A lot of "China bristle" brushes but have no idea what they really are. Trying to get a job done this week if possible. Going to try local paint stores tomorrow "Sherwin-Williams, Dunn Edwards near me) but online no luck finding anything there. Also I don't remember any mention of how to apply the same way in vertical surfaces. Not always able to apply on a flat fairly level horizontal surface like that piece you do in the video. Also once the Poly is set to tacky, can the object be rotated to vertical to do the next surface or will it cause the material to sag slightly and not cure correctly? As seen, it could take weeks to do 3-4 coats, one horizontal surface at a time and waiting for next coat. This applies to cabinets and finished furniture cabinets that have more than one surface to cover. In this case it's a 80" high by 24" wide by 22" deep cabinet with one non adjustable shelf, so have to get inside it and do the 3 inside wall surfaces along with the top inside surface and the top of the shelf surface, and of course 3 outside walls, the top and the cabinet face.. Any comments on how long to wait after an oil based stain is applied? The one I used is Varathane 1 hour between coats fast dry Ebony stain. They say apply Varathane clear an hour after stain applied but doing all the thinning for application, not sure if that changes that time.
Lot here Jeff. I bought my last brush at St Louis Art Supple. They sell 3" varnish brushes that artists use. China bristle are ox hair but not all oxen hair is the same. Depends on what part of the oxen the hair comes from. Vertical surfaces are applies exactly the same. Remember to apply thinned urethane in thin coats. No runs there. Instaed of applying 3-4 rows and then feathering, just apply 1-2 rows and then feather. A good brush will handle 80 inches easily. If your brush doesn't do the top 40", then the bottom 40" then feather the entire 80" top to bottom. Personally I let everything dry overnight. Thinning does not alter time to ant significant degree. best . . . paul

Hi Paul, I’m going to be doing stairs in my home. Unfortunately, these stairs will still need to be used while waiting for the polyurethane to dry. What do you think about just doing one side at a time? And then protecting the other side. ( we have 3 cats) my husband is worried about it being uneven by doing it that way.
Hey Slumber. Yeeesh! I assume sleeping quarters are upstairs. I would do the whole tread very early morning and block them off till evening. Wear only soft socks when retiring for the day. Repeat next morning. best . . . paul

Hi, what about tips tiny puddles in very gnarled polyd wood . I used my fingernail to take bits off after first coat dried . Maybe i should not have waited but then its hard to tell what puddles are going to last (water based)
Actually , a pen seems to work
Sorry not sure I understand? best . . . paul
instead of using the brown paper bag method, is it ok to use somem 0000 steel wool?
Hey Volksbugly. #0000 steall wool is somewhere around an 800 grit sandpaper. Bag material varies but typically it's around 2500 grit. Steel wool will dull the sheen a brown paper bag will not. best . . . paul
@@paulsDIYsolutions Thanks! Also your videos are the best out here for finishing. I've watched several. :)
18:10 Sanding Small/Medium Bubbles. Before doing the sanding, how long did you allow poly to dry/cure before? 12 hours, 24 hours, 1 week, 2 weeks?
Hey MM. My wife says "size matters". I pray she's talkning about bubbles. If they are smaller than a pin head you can sand the next day. If they are larger sand the next day but keep your fingers crossed that they don't create pock marks. best . . . paul
@@paulsDIYsolutions Great thanks!
Love your videos! I have watched this one at least 4 times, and many others. And I agree with your overall consensus that fast drying poly is truly a bad thing for us. So that being said, do you have any recommendations for poly that is not fast drying that is still available?
I haven't checked to see if all polyurethanes aren't fast drying. Best to go with oil based poly. best . . . paul

Hey Jeana. I've never worked with rubberwood either. best . . . paul
Hey Paul, you're such an inspiration. I always come back to this and other videos you posted for not only guidance but inspiration and some "can-do" energy. Thank you very much!
Hey Jorge. Never thought of myself as a motivational speaker. New career, maybe? Thanx for watching and the inspiration! best . . . paul
Great video. Question: I need to apply spar poly to a hung door. Would I change the poly/mineral spirits ratio to make it a little thicker or a little thinner? I think there might be pros and cons to each.
Wedned. I thin 3:1 still. best . . . paul
Great Video! Question: When you keep the paint thinner to reuse in the yogurt containers 5:27. It doesn't matter that you are dipping the brush into dirty paint thinner when you come back to clean the brush tomorrow and later in the week (after applying the 2nd and 3rd coat) ?
Hey M.M. So you add one new cup at the end of each cleaning. So the final rinse is in unused polyurethane. Hope that makes sense. best . . . paul
@@paulsDIYsolutions Thanks for your reply, I believe I understand you. So I have cups 1, 2, 3, 4. I apply my first coat of poly and then I go through the process in your video. I wake up the next day and go apply my 2nd coat of poly. Then I use cups 1, 2, 3, 4 again with the same thinner, but I add a 5th cup at the end with brand new thinner in it?
@@m.m.land_YT Yep. You got it!
Master class!
Thanx Upadyaya. Glad to be oart of your journey. best . . . paul
Do you have a video where you tone down a dark stain? i.e. is it better to flood and wipe one time for a lighter finish (using a dark stain) but it won't set as deep. Or tone down the stain first (via mixing with something) and do the two coats for a deeper but lighter color?
Hey Tony. Good questions. I would experiment first using scrap or a hidden spot (like the underside). Then try wiping a little sooner and see if after one coat you like it. Or you can thin it a little with paint thinner. best . . . paul
@@paulsDIYsolutions great suggestions! thanks! glad to help keep traditional workman's art alive!
Where can I buy the natural bristle brush, 2 inches thick, that appears at the 4:43 mark in your video? Who makes it? I’ve asked all over, looked on Amazon, and I can’t find a brush like that. Thanks!
Hey Playadelfin. Good brushes are almost impossible to find in the hardware or paint isles. We have become a throw-away society. People spend big bucks on designer wear and high end autos but buy the cheapest tool that might accomplish a task they understand little about. Retailers won't tie up shelf space for quality tools that can sit for years. I bought my last brush from an art supply store. They sell varnish brushes that artists use. They have them in 3 inches. Check out St Louis Art Supply under varnish brushes. best . . . paul
Thank you very much for the info about the brush. I will order it today. And thanks for your excellent videos.
Thank you so much! This is very helpful-going to sand bubbles now! Can you do one about removing a brush hair? How to remove when it is wet and after it has dried? That would be so helpful!
Hey Anna. The key is a good brush. They don't shed. best . . . paul
I have boiled linseed oil (real, without additives/driers). Do you recommend thinning that? I was thinking 50%, then 25%, then 0% for the third coat onwards. Because I believe pure Tung oil is thicker in comparison.
Hey Dennis. Yes I would. The thinning part is fot absorption. Linseed and Tung Oils are calssified as drying oils which means they will harden in time. The problem is the time can be weeks to months. The Super heating part changes them chemically so they dry faster. The benefit of oils other than drop dead gorgeous appearance is penetration. When an oil dries slowly it tends to continue its penetration until dry. So it's a DEEP luxurious finish. Oils that dry fast tend not to penetrate as deep. Thinning helps with absorption. So yes I would still thin. If you follow the Tung Oil thinnning guides and recoating timing you'll end up with the best finish possible. best . . . paul
Thanks Paul
Be warned that 2K poly can melt plastic containers
Hey Dennis. Yep. I don't recommend them because of their toxicity levels. Not for the inexperienced!! best . . . paul
I know you hate no odor mineral spirits, but I have a full can of "low odor" mineral spirits, is that acceptable for thinning?..I also have a 10 year old can of turpentine.
HeyMark. I don'ty like the low odor because they have added water somehow to the formula. Water under polyurethane creates a white, milky haze. It is okay for cleaning but I don't recommend it for thinning. I think the turoentine will be okay but it doesn't last 10 years in my shop so I really have no comment or basis for fact. Sorry best . . . paul
Any tips for applying poly on a vertical surface?
Hey Robin. Exactly the same procedure. Here's where a really good brush will be your best friend. best . . . paul
Hi Paul. Thank you for this fantastic video. I am sanding back and want to coat a water based polyurethane on a table. Would you recommend the same technique you use with oil with a water based too? Obviously you would use water to thin down the product. Also is it possible to use a foam roller to put down polyurethane? I would have thought it would be a good method but you are using a brush. In your experience is this better? Really appreciate any advice you could give me. Cheers from Melbourne Australia. Evan.
Hey Evan. The procedure, thinning and application is exactly the same with water. You just have to move faster (set up (time until it becomes tacky and unworkable) is way faster (3-5 minutes water vs. 12-15 minutes oil). I thought "This guy will be okay" until you mentioned a roller. Rollers are for painting walls!! LOL. Don't know if you guys have badgers down under (they are an endangered spieces here in the states so they'tr outlawed). But if you can find a badger hair brush you are gold. And plaese don't mentioned rollers again when talking about furniture finishing. best . . . paul
Thank you so much for this video!
You are so welcome!
Fabulous video! I learned a lot! If you found you missed a small spot of polyurethane after it dries-should you fill in the spot knowing it will be sanded out eventually? Or just catch it on the next coating?
Hey Anna. The next coat will get it. best . . . paul
You sound like you would be a fantastic wood shop teacher. If kids these days were more absorbent and respectful I think that would be a fun way for you to “retire”
Hey Jax. I am having fun without any commitment. Teaching would interferre with my cocktail hour. Thanx for the compliment though. I do enjoy teaching what little I know. best . . . paul
Would u use a roller for doing a wood floor? Kinda big job for a brush for me. It is oil based poly .. thanks for your help
Hey FMR. Too big a job to use my technique. I would go to a floor guy video. They use squeegees or lambs wool mops. best . . . paul
@@paulsDIYsolutions thank you so much for getting back to me I appreciate your advice
Hey Paul, I went to your site and it says, Account Suspended. Do you have another web site? Thanks
Thanx Butterfly. Your about the 5th person to mention it. I don't know what happened but ity just happened. I will check this week. Thanx again. best . . . paul
Wondering what your thoughts are on spraying polyurethane?
Hey Stephen. Personally I don't spray polyurethane. If I spray it's lacquer. Lacquer dries within seconds and you can respray without scratch sanding. best . . . paul
I have tried to visit your website but I’m getting account suspended pop up, do you have another site or some way to download pdf etc ? Great videos, very useful. I have been working with wood for over 40 years, yet still learning stuff, many thanks
IHey Ricky. It must have just gone down. Someone mentioned it yesterdy as well. I will check today. Please re try in a couple days. Sorry. Thanx for the heads up. best . . . paul

What is the name of the spar vanish you use?
Hey Chris. I typically buy from Lee Valley Tools or Sutherland Wells online. I also used Epiphanes and Total Boat. best . . . paul
